Al Kline is a Signature-Merit Artist who began painting watercolor in April 2017. He is a signature member of the Southwestern Watercolor Society (SWS) and Watercolor Society of South Texas (WSST).   • Is this course for beginner or advanced artists and do I need to know how to paint watercolor?

    This course is for beginner, intermediate, and advanced artists. All artists are welcome regardless of drawing ability. This course uses pencil, pen, ink and watercolor as my medium of choice in order to understand the fundamentals of drawing. This course is both for urban sketchers and painters. This foundations course will teach the basics of drawing and also includes painting with ink and watercolor to create form and shadow. This course is also a great introduction to watercolor if you are just beginning and will provide valuable painting techniques to the intermediate and advanced artist.

  • How is this drawing course related to watercolor painting?

    My personal approach to watercolor painting involves preliminary pencil sketches, pen and ink drawing, and watercolor paint. You will learn how to create simple sketches, value studies and the preliminary work that is essential to good painting habits. I firmly believe that good drawing habits have its foundation in traditional drawing technique and will help you improve your overall approach to watercolor painting.

  • Do I need to buy a lot of expensive supplies for this course?

    No. You will need just a few simple materials such as pencils, fountain pens, archival ink, neutral tint paint, a few brushes with a sketch book and paper. You can use your own materials or buy the materials suggested in this course.

  • Will there be updates to this course and will I have to pay extra for them?

  • Will I be able to learn how to paint watercolor in this course?

    This course has its foundation in drawing and that will include demonstrations on drawing and painting using either ink or watercolor to create volume and depth to our drawings. This course is a great introduction to learning how to paint and understand some qualities of watercolor painting that will help you in future watercolor painting courses.

  • Do I need to buy a projector or other tools to be able to draw accurately?

    This course is designed to help you draw confidently and accurately without the use of projectors, tracing paper or phone applications. This fundamentals course will teach you the art of traditional 'site line' drawing taught in many art schools and has been the foundation of traditional drawing for centuries. Learning these fundamentals will help you both in studio painting and when painting en plein air or urban sketching, where such devices are never used.
